Biography

Sheikh Abdul Wahab Nuri (RA) belonged to a scholarly family deeply connected to the Qadiriyya lineage in Kashmir. Educated in Arabic grammar, logic, and jurisprudence, he soon turned toward the Sufi path. His teacher, Sheikh Nur Muḥammad Qadiri (RA), trained him in the subtleties of zikr, meditation, and moral refinement.

His contemporaries regarded him as a paragon of humility, generosity, and detachment from material life.

He established a khanqah in Sopore, which became a refuge for the poor and a centre for Qadiri study circles. He also promoted literacy and Quranic education, ensuring equal access for students regardless of social background – a distinctive reformist approach for his time.

Legacy and Shrine

After his passing in 1185 AH / 1771 CE, Sheikh Abdul Wahab’s shrine became one of the most visited Qadiri sites in north Kashmir. His teachings influenced later reformist movements and bridged classical Sufism with emerging intellectual trends in the 18th century.

 

Legends and Oral Tradition

Local oral accounts claim that a luminous aura surrounded his tomb for seven nights after his death, symbolising his sanctity – a common hagiographic motif in Kashmiri spiritual literature.
