Born 1085 AH / 1674 CE in Tral, Pulwama; died 1165 AH / 1752 CE; buried at Tral, Kashmir.

 

Order and Lineage

 

Eminent saint of the Naqshbandiyya order; disciple of Khawaja Muḥammad Masud Bukhari (RA), the celebrated Naqshbandi of Kabul.

Biography

Sheikh Abdul Karim Trali (RA) was among the foremost Kashmiri exponents of Naqshbandi spirituality. His family, known for piety and learning, introduced him early to Quranic education and Persian literature.

As a young man, he travelled to Kabul, where he studied under Khawaja Muḥammad Masud Bukhari (RA) and received khilafat-nama (license of succession). On returning to Kashmir, he established a khanqah in Tral, where he trained numerous disciples.

His teachings transformed Tral into a significant Naqshbandi centre. The Khanqah-e-Trali still upholds his daily rituals of zikr and meditation. His Urs is celebrated annually and attended by both scholars and lay devotees.

Legends and Oral Tradition

According to regional lore, Sheikh Abdul Karim (RA) would often meditate beside the river Jhelum for days, surrounded by light visible to onlookers. Though symbolic, this tale embodies the Naqshbandi emphasis on inward illumination.
