Biography

Mir Muḥammad Afẓal Qadiri (RA) was one of the leading Sufi scholars of the Mughal era in Kashmir. He was deeply versed in Quranic commentary, Hadith, and fiqh, combining formal scholarship with deep mysticism. His early training was in Srinagar, after which he travelled to Lahore and Delhi, where he met prominent Sufis and renewed his Qadiriyya affiliation.

Returning to Kashmir, he established a Khanqah at Zaldagar, which became a renowned seat of Sufi teaching. Among his disciples were Sheikh Muḥammad Faẓil Zunimari (RA) and several local scholars who carried forward his spiritual lineage.

Legends and Oral Tradition

Popular traditions recount that during a great flood, his prayers diverted the waters from Srinagar’s core, saving the city. While not historically verifiable, such stories attest to the saint’s enduring place in Kashmiri devotion.
